In 2023, while working in technology at one of New Zealand’s big corporates, a colleague of Modient's founder had her car stolen from her driveway. She walked outside early one morning and it was gone. That night, the same car was used in a ram raid at a local vape store.
At the time, New Zealand was seeing a wave of ram raids and vehicle thefts. Cars were being taken from driveways, used to smash into shops, then abandoned or written off. For the owner, the police report helped with insurance, but beyond that there was very little anyone could do.
The car was gone, and there was no simple way to know where it had been taken.
This time it was a teenager’s old Toyota, bought with months of savings. Like a lot of first cars, it meant far more than its market value.
It was stolen, taken for a joyride, and eventually dumped at Muriwai, an isolated surf beach on Auckland’s rugged west coast. By the time it was found, it had been stripped, damaged by the tide, and left half buried in the sand.
It was not insured.
That was the moment the problem became impossible to ignore.
